KAMLOOPS — It’s being called a heartless theft after a large volume of pet supplies was stolen from the Four Paws Food Bank tent outside of the Sandman Centre Wednesday night.

According to staff, a large amount of cat food and cat litter, as well some dog food, was stolen from the Four Paws site.

Volunteer Susanne Flukinger says there was no one monitoring the area at the time of the incident.

“It was nighttime and we had been caring for pets overnight,” said Flukinger. “We had managed to get them into care with families who could care with them until they could go home so there wasn’t anyone here overnight. All we hope is the thieves needed it more than the evacuees.”

Four Paws has been providing food, leashes and other supplies to more than 70 evacuees pets since the wildfires began.

Word of the theft quickly spread throughout the city, with Absorbent Products staff delivering hundreds of dollars worth of cat litter to the centre Friday morning.

Costco also stepped up donating bags of dog food.

Flukinger says the level of generosity has been overwhelming.

“It’s just wonderful it’s so encouraging,” said Flukinger. “Numerous organization from as far as 100 Mile House and  Prince George have also offered supplies to get us back up and operating. People have been donating ever since it happened to help us replace what was lost.”
