Kamloops MP applauds governor general selection

Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod has taken issue with plenty of Justin Trudeau’s choices as prime minister, but has no quibbles with his choice to replace David Johnston as Canada’s next governor general.

Former astronaut Julie Payette was unveiled as Trudeau’s recommendation Thursday.

Payette was the first Canadian woman to visit the International Space Station, and will become Canada’s 29th viceregal.

McLeod says she is an excellent choice to succeed Johnston.

“A very, very well-known Canadian. A Canadian who, I think, we all admire and respect. I want to congratulate her,” said McLeod.

“I think it will be a great opportunity for her to bring a new perspective to the job.”

While governor general is largely a ceremonial role, McLeod notes strong constitutional knowledge is a must.

“When the last governor general was selected, it was during the time of minority parliament and we knew we needed to look toward someone who had some good expertise, and constitutional expertise. Our new governor general has tremendous abilities and will do a fantastic job.”

“I want to thank David Johnston who, in my opinion, has done a tremendous job over the last number of years,” added McLeod.
