KAMLOOPS —A small brush fire west of the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre is now in the mop-up stage.

Kamloops Fire Rescue was called out to the fire near the Kamloops Target Sports Association Gun Range shortly before 9 a.m.

Smoke from the three hectare fire was visible from the Trans-Canada Hwy, as well as across the river near the airport.

“There were some people using the gun range and they reported the fire,” said Platoon Captain Troy Grant. “Immediately we had three apparatus and eight firefighters respond.”

“Initially the report was that someone in the gun range may have started it with a shot fired into the hillside, that’s unconfirmed at this point.”

No buildings were threatened by the flames and no people were at risk.

The BC Forest Service provided air support to douse the flames, and by mid-afternoon the fire was reduced to a smolder.

“Our crews arrived first on scene, and started to action the fire,” Grant said. “They requested assistance from the BC Forest Service as well and they were able to action using the airtankers. The now have 3-6 firefighters joined with our crews up there involved in mop up right now as well.”
