KAMLOOPS — A local elementary school is one of four winners of the BCAA Play Here contest.

Marion Schilling Elementary will be awarded $100,000 to build a new playground on its campus.

The result was based on online voting.

Principal Gordon Cumming says the improvement will be noticed by the entire Valleyview neighbourhood.

“We are the only place in Valleyview where kids can really come and play — it is more of a community centre. We back onto city land, which has Valleyview Centennial Park, it has a lacrosse box. There are a lot of kids in the neighbourhood who come down here any play, and of course during the day we have our kids out there,” said Cumming.

Rebecca Cain of the Marion Schilling Parent Advisory Committee says the fundraising push was a group effort.

“We have so much gratitude for our community, getting behind us and really supporting our families and our children in being successful in this. We really appreciate all of that,” said Cain.

Cumming says work to replace the playground will likely take place this September.
