Changes coming to Kamloops bylaw department

KAMLOOPS — A comprehensive review of the City of Kamloops Bylaw Enforcement Division has been finished, and city council will hear the results at a workshop tomorrow.

Corporate Services and Community Safety Director David Duckworth says the changes in light of the review include renaming the department ‘Bylaw Services,’ recognizing that enforcement is often the last desired step.

Duckworth adds, in spite of a spike in the number of encounters with highly-charged, aggressive people, the city has decided against arming bylaw officers with defensive weaponry such as handcuffs and pepper spray.

“About a quarter of municipalities throughout the province do provide that equipment for their officers. However, the recommendation has come back not to provide that, but really to focus on not getting our staff into those situations where they need to defend themselves,” said Duckworth.
