Trans Canada reopened west of Revelstoke after washout

UPDATE: The Trans Canada Highway near Revelstoke reopened at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday.

EARLIER:

REVELSTOKE — A wash out has closed the Trans Canada Highway 25 kilometers west of Revelstoke.

And it could be some time before it’s open again.

Crews are still doing an assessment, but there’s no estimated time of reopening.

RCMP have told the media saying the road could be closed for two days.

Camp Creek apparently overflowed at the Camp Creek Bridge, just after 11:00 PM Thursday night.

Corporal Thomas Blakney says a build up of debris at the bridge backed up the creek, forcing water across the highway.

Drivers are being diverted via Highway 23 south of Revelstoke, to the Shelter Bay ferry, then across Highway 6 to the north Okanagan.

Corporal Blakney says that’s a long detour, and will cause long delays and backed up traffic at the ferry, so travellers should consider another route before heading out.

Revelstoke is backed right up with vehicles waiting to see what pans out today, and only local traffic is heading west out of Revelstoke this morning.
