Riverside Park pier closed as Thompson River rises

KAMLOOPS — The city has now raised the floodwatch concerns to ‘stage yellow‘ in Kamloops, meaning that there is heightened concern over the rise of river levels around the city.

Officials are now taking a number of safety precautions – the latest including the closure of the pier at Riverside Park.

At this point the pier is likely to be closed for several weeks, and comes only days after the Rivers Trail between Pioneer Park and Riverside Park was closed due to high water.

Utilties Services Manager Greg Wightman says the upgraded stage has triggered a new set of protocols.

“We have now moved to daily dike inspections. We have been doing weekly up weekly to this point, now our staff will be doing daily inspections 24/7 until the water drops again,” said Wightman.

The city is also actively sealing catch basins in various locations.
