Day of Mourning to remember those killed in the workplace

KAMLOOPS — A gathering is taking place tonight to remember workers who have been killed or injured in the workplace. 

The annual Day of Mourning event begins at 6 p.m. at St. Andrews on the Square. 

A moment of silence will mark the somber occasion, and wreaths will be laid in memory of workers who have lost their lives on the job. 

Last year there were 144 work-related deaths in B.C., and the hope is that tonight’s ceremony will encourage people to work safe.

“I’d like to see workers coming down so they can sort of get the feel and realize that it is an important thing,” said Jim Waldie of the Kamloops and District Labour Council. “Until it happens to you or a close one to you you don’t even know or realize how tragic it is until all of a sudden it affects you, because you’ve lost a friend, or a brother, or a father.”
