COMOX, B.C. — The province has announced its contributing $350-thousand to the Vimy Foundation to create a memorial park at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial grounds.

The Vimy Foundation is a Canadian charity that aims to promote awareness of the World War 1 battle throughout educational programs and projects.

100 Vimy Oak trees are being planted on the Vimy Ridge grounds as part of the Centennial Park project.

In light of the Sundays 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the B.C. government also announced a plan to lower Canadian Armed forces tuition costs.

This includes a 50% reduction in tuition fees for any B.C post post-secondary institution.

“Canadian Armed Forces members are our best and bravest, but we know that the transition from military to civilian life can be challenging,” said Jim Benninger, BC Liberal candidate in Courtenay-Comox. “This platform commitment is a small but meaningful way to show our appreciation for their service, as they make that transition and help contribute to our growing economy.”

The rebate would be for veterans who have served in the Regular Force or as a Class “C” Reservist for at least three years.

The commitment will be included in the party’s platform for the provincial election, which takes place May 9th.
