KAMLOOPS — Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod is calling on Ontario senator Don Meredith to resign.

According to the Canadian Press, an ethics report released earlier this month revealed Meredith had an alleged affair with a 16-year-old girl that spanned two years.

The 52-year-old, who is married and has two children, acknowledged the sexual relations in the report but said it only happened after she turned 18.

While he’s taken a leave of absence from the Senate, Meredith argues there are no legal grounds to fire him.

For McLeod, the issue comes down to ethics.

“I listened to his lawyer and I was horrified with the defence he was putting forward suggesting racism had a play, suggesting in some cultures it was appropriate to be with someone as young as 12,” said McLeod. “It’s Canada, it’s not appropriate. We need to hold our senators to a standard of conduct that people look up to. Absolutely he should resign and if not I believe the senate should take any action feasible.”

The ethics committee is expected to deliver its report on March 28th.
