Vibe take gold at provincials

KAMLOOPS —  The Kamloops Vibe swept the Provincial Championships with four wins to come away with the gold medal this weekend.

Fraser Valley Jets 5-0

Ashley Fisher earned her 12th and 13th shut-outs this season, 14th for the team.

The Richmond Devils earned the Bronze Medal over the Jets.

 

The Kamloops Vibe traveled to Richmond this past weekend for the Provincial Championships, sweeping the tournament with four wins and bringing home the Provincial Championship Banner.

The weekend got under way for the Vibe on Friday evening with a 2-1 victory over the second place South Fraser TNT. After a scoreless first period Jackie Sollis gave Kamloops the lead late in the second assisted by Amber Gudmundson.  Midway through the third the TNT tied the game only to have Kacey Seymour get the game winner three minutes later with Sollis assisting. The Vibe killed a five on three penalty with four minutes left in the game to preserve the win. Shots for the game were 25-21 for the Vibe.

The team was back on the ice at noon Saturday to take on the Fraser Valley Jets. The Vibe completely dominated the Jets’ two best players for the 5-0 win. The Vibe got pairs of goals from Melissa Brunn and Alyssa Reid and a single from Sollis.  Emily Edmundson got three assists with Gaylene Scott adding another. This was the teams 13th shut-out and Ashley Fisher’s 12th of the season. Shots were 31-18 for Kamloops.  Both the Devils and Vibe were top in their respective pools and by-passed the quarter finals directly to the semi-finals on Sunday.

The Sunday morning semi-final was a re-match with the Jets.  With less than a minute remaining in the opening period Kacey Seymour put the Vibe up by one on an assist from Cat Young.  Edmundson added another less that a minute into the second, assist from Brunn. The Jets got to within a goal midway through the period, but Sylvia Traversa added an insurance marker on assists from Alana Parker and Bianca Olsen. The Vibe out-shot the Jets by a 33-14 margin. This win puts the Vibe into the gold medal game.

The TNT defeated the Devils 1-0 in the other semi-final to set up another re-match for the Vibe in the gold game. After a scoreless first period Alana Parker scored the only goal of the game less than two minutes into the second. Parker was assisted by Traversa and Scott. The Vibe held on to take the gold medal, the Provincial banner, and earn their second shut-out of the tourney. Shots were 32-31 in favor of the Vibe.

The Vibe finish the season with a 18-5-7 record with 14 shut-out wins. Rochelle Smith finished third in the scoring race with 19 goals and 12 assists. Ashley Fisher was the top goalie with 13 shut-outs and a .961 save %.
