KAMLOOPS — WolfPack Give Dinos Run In Opener Of Canada West Men’s Basketball QF

Calgary, AB—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack battled back from a nine point first quarter deficit and just fell short to the defending league champion Calgary Dinos 75-71 in the opener of their Canada West men’s basketball quarterfinal.  The Dinos, playing on their home court of the Jack Simpson Memorial Gym lead the best of three series 1-0.

 

 

SYNOPSIS:

The Dinos went on a 14-0 run in the first quarter and after TRU pulled to within 10, Calgary went on a 9-0 run in a 24 second span to end the first half where they led 43-24. In the third quarter, the WolfPack went on a big run and cut the deficit to four after three quarters (52-48).  In that quarter, TRU scored 24 points to Calgary’s 19.

In the fourth quarter, TRU was only a point behind. In the last two minutes, Volodymyr Iegorov (5th year, forward, Donetsk, Ukraine) had the chance to tie the game at 69 but missed.  Calgary followed up with David Kapinga draining a three pointer with 47 seconds left to give them a 72-66 advantage.

Iegorov finished with a game high 27 points.   Calgary’s top scorer was Thomas Cooper with 21.

The Dinos have now beaten TRU four straight times dating back to last year’s Canada West championship final. They and the WolfPack play game two tomorrow (Friday, Feb 24) at the Jack Simpson Gym.  The game begins at 6 pm PDT.  Should a third and deciding game be needed, it would be played Saturday (Feb 25) also in Calgary with a 5 pm PDT start time.
