KAMLOOPS — From the time she came to Kamloops in 2014, Iuliia Pakhomenko has been a force to be reckoned with.

She really started receiving national attention last year for an outstanding season that earned her the Female Athlete of the Year honour in Canada.

Now the spotlight is back on her as she climbs up the Canada West all-time kills list, with 1,100 going into the weekend.

“It means hard work pays off,” says Pakhomenko. “I just love this sport, and when you love what you do, it doesn’t matter how hard it is. For me, it’s easy.”

Pakhomenko currently sits in the seventh position and will likely move into the fifth spot after this weekend, only 35 kills away.

Chad Grimm attributes her success to not only being a great athlete, but also one that prepares like no other.

There are two other current players ahead of pakhomenko on the all-time kills list — Sophie Carpentier from Trinity Western University, fourth all-time with 1,150, and the second-best on the list, Meg Casault who has 1,212.

Keep in mind those two athletes are in their fifth years in U-Sport. Pakhomenko’s in her third. But if she can average at least 30 kills a game in the last eight outings — not out of the question one bit — it would put her at 1,340 and give her a shot to be the all-time kills leader in Canada West history.
