Hydro demand hits new record

VANCOUVER —  BC Hydro set a new record for power consumption Tuesday between 5 and 6 pm when demand peaked at 10-thousand-126 megawatts.

That broke the previous record set ten years ago by 13 megawatts.

Hydro says demand for electricity is expected to remain high as the cold weather continues.

The peak times in the winter months are between 4 and 8 p.m. on weekday evenings, when most people come home, turn up the heat, switch on the lights, and make dinner.

Hydro says you can help ease the pressure at peak times by managing your thermostat. Lowering the house temperature by two degrees can cut power consumption by 5 percent.
