With novelty underwear, TRU grads put their money where Trump’s mouth is

KAMLOOPS — A pair of Thompson Rivers University grads are offering customers a unique way to protest against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Matt Paish and Sarb Gill run Undies for Humanity, a small scale underwear company.

Paish says the company’s goal is more than simple profit.

“For the past two years, we’ve been researching underwear and trying to figure out how we can create a business that has the maximum net benefit from every stage from the production to the manufacturers, even benefitting charities as well as the customers, to pay it forward.”

Paish and Gill have launched a crowd-funding campaign to help them manufacture what they call ‘The Protest Pair.’

The men’s boxers feature a shouting cartoon Trump-like figure, and have a horizontal fly sewn into his mouth.

“We really believe in equal rights and justice for everybody, whether they’re black, white, Muslim, part of the LGBTQ community,” Paish said.

“No matter who you are, we believe in equal rights. We thought Mr. Trump didn’t really represent those people in America in the way that we would want them to be represented. So we thought, why not make a pair of underwear that addresses these issues and protest the ridiculous with something equally as ridiculous.”

Paish says the company’s goal is to raise $15,000 by Inauguration Day, with corresponding donations going to U.S. charities ideologically opposed by the Trump administration.

“The project either moves forward or it doesn’t on January 20, the day that Mr. Trump becomes inaugurated.”

“If this novelty product becomes successful and people catch on and appreciate what we’re doing by making underwear to stand up for what we believe in, and if they share the same view or just simply like the product and the features, then we could see ourselves doing similar pairs in the future. As well as for women.”
