KAMLOOPS — Good news for hockey lovers, the new ice rink at Sun Peaks is officially open.

Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine said construction on the NHL-sized rink began earlier this year.

He says the decision to build the new-and-improved rink was due to the original rink’s ice beginning to melt by spring.

“Our goal was to have a rink that would have refrigeration and run the whole months of the ski season,” said Raine. “Thanks to help from the province, we got a grant to kick start us and here we are.”

Raine says the province chipped in 300-thousand dollars, with the total cost of the projected tagged at just over one-million dollars.

The rink is now open to the public for a fee, with a few hockey matches also scheduled to take place throughout the season.

“It opens at about noon each day,” added Raine. “People can book the ice for later things, we have some hockey games coming, some Kamloops old timers coming up to paly a couple of matches up here. Ice skating and hockey is all about Canada, and if you’re a winter resort you need to have ice skating.”
