Yet another huge development proposed for McGill corridor

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops confirms another huge multi-family development is being considered for McGill Road near Thompson Rivers University.

Tri City Canada has applied to rezone a light industrial property bounded by McGill, Hillside Drive and Camosun Crescent, with the intention of transforming it into a mixed use property including 208 residential units.

This comes after a six-building, 375-unit apartment complex proposal from Cross Developments was sent to public hearing last month.

And TRU itself is planning a major expansion of development on its campus, called ‘The Reach.’

Development and Engineering Services Director Marvin Kwiatkowski says the McGill corridor is becoming a key focus of the Kamloops’ development community.

“That area is drawing significant, of course around TRU and the Cross development as well,” said Kwiatkowski. “There seems to be a fair bit of energy and interest in that location, which is sort of a key hub in our city. With TRU and their plans for growthy, that seems to draw a fair bit of attention.”

Kwiatkowski says, if the developments eventually go ahead, the city would need to look at speeding up infrastructure improvements for the area.

“Not all of the infrastructure is in place. If you look at multi-use paths and sidewalks, they may be on our plans. Obviously development can pay for a portion of that, and where there’s not development adjacent, we would have to come up with the dollars. So sometimes it’s reshifting priorities and plans.”
