City provides snow-clearing budget update

KAMLOOPS — As 2016 winds down, the City of Kamloops snow-clearing budget remains healthy.

Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow says, with ten days left in the year, about 70 per cent of the $1.6 million annual budget has been spent.

But Farrow says a major snow event can eat up the remainder very quickly.

“We had a large, significant snow event on Boxing Day last year. That one event was a couple hundred thousand to begin right there. We’re by no means out of the woods yet with our budget, but at this point things are looking positive,” said Farrow.

“It is healthy right now, based on the fact that February and March of 2016 were very mild, as was October and November, and that is why we are in a pretty good position. We did have a significant event in January which consumed a lot of the budget, and we have had a fair bit of activity here in the last month.”

“Very few incidents cost a lot of money. Thankfully we haven’t had the freeze and thaw cycling, where we have had to put down a lot more salt, and calcium chloride, and other more expensive means in combating this.”

Farrow says, if they don’t have any more snow to clear in the days ahead, his crews will concentrate on filling the potholes that inevitably pop up during the typical Kamloops freeze-thaw cycle.
