Herdman, Sinclair shut out of FIFA awards, Griezmann takes on Messi, Ronaldo
ZURICH — Canadian coach John Herdman and captain Christine Sinclair were shut out of the shortlists for FIFA’s annual awards Friday.
Both were in the original list of 10 candidates for female coach and player of the year, respectively.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have dominated the men’s awards for the last eight years, are up again, along with Antoine Griezmann. Messi and Ronaldo have finished first or second in seven of those years.
FIFA named the France forward on a three-man shortlist for the rebranded Best Player Award. All three candidates play for Spanish clubs.
