CounterAttack check stops coming soon

KAMLOOPS — Police are reminding holiday partiers to plan ahead for a ride home.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says more officers will be on shift throughout the holiday season, and many of them will be patroling the streets, looking for people have made the poor decision to drive after overimbibing.

Shelkie notes several CounterAttack check stops will be set up as well.

She says drinking before driving isn’t the only concern.

“I just want people to also remember it’s not just impaired by alcohol, it’s impaired by drugs as well. We have specially trained drug recognition experts who will be out on the road. They can determine if you are under the influence of a drug, and you can still be charged with impaired driving,” explained Shelkie.

Shelkie reminds drivers if they are caught driving while impaired, they can have their vehicles taken off the road immediately for up to 30 days, and can be subject to thousands of dollars in associated costs.

“That is a big hit to people who need their vehicle for transportation for work. Cost related to the offences of impaired driving can add up from $600 to $4,000, even if it is the first time a driver is caught.”

“Make a plan before you leave. Either have a designated driver, plan on taking a taxi, or public transportation, or using Operation Red Nose. The consequences of impaired driving are massive, and you are risking your life, and the lives of others. You can be charged criminally, and there is an effect on you, your family, and your friends.”
