Slow start for Operation Red Nose

KAMLOOPS — Operation Red Nose had a slow opening weekend in Kamloops, but Co-ordinator Katie Klassen says busier times are not far away.

Klassen says the volunteer-driven designated driving service gave a total of 119 rides spread over Friday and Saturday nights.

“We were a little bit down from the last couple of years of our opening weekend. We did start a little bit earlier this year, by a few days. We are ready to ramp up this next weekend with lots of Christmas parties happening, so we are getting excited for that,” said Klassen.

Klassen notes the service has already booked several holiday parties over the coming weekends, and needs more volunteers to help ensure service to those parties is timely.

“Especially Saturday December 10, and Saturday, December 17, we have lots of Christmas parties booked with us, so we are hoping to have as many teams on the road as possible to help people get home safely.”

She adds the service is running Thursdays for the first time this year, and hopes to make that a permanent addition for years to come.

“Starting this Thursday, December 1, we are going to do the first three Thursdays in December. Hopefully we can provide a few people rides home on those Thursday nights, and hopefully it is a success and we can continue doing it from this year on.”
