Train hits pickup truck in downtown Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say no one was injured after a train traveling the CP tracks downtown last night hit a vehicle.

Police say the train engineer noticed a Dodge pickup truck partly on the tracks near Lansdowne Street and Third Avenue at about 12:30 a.m.

The train couldn’t stop in time and hit the truck’s front end.

Staff Sergeant Doug Aird says investigators have determined there was no mechanical issue with the truck, but its placement at the side of the track was connected to the intoxication of its operators.

“Witnesses did note a male and female outside the vehicle just after the collision,” said Aird.

“Upon our arrival, the female was the only one present. She was arrested for being intoxicated in public and will be held in cells until sober, and she is definitely related to that vehicle.”

Aird notes a train hit a semi truck at a rural crossing east of Kamloops just a few days ago, once again causing no injuries.

He reminds drivers trains take a long time to come to a stop, and it’s always a good idea to be careful around train crossings.
