Treatment centre compliant with regulations, says report on overdose death

VANCOUVER — An investigation by a British Columbia health care authority says a treatment centre where a young man died of a drug overdose was in compliance with provincial regulations.

Vancouver Coastal Health says the RCMP found evidence that Brandon Jansen most likely got the drugs that contributed to his death from another patient who obtained them while on a day pass.

It says police also found “another illegal substance” in Jansen’s room hidden in a container labelled as supplements, which were believed to have been brought to the centre by a family member.

Jansen died in March at the Sunshine Health Centre in Powell River, where he was receiving treatment for addiction to the dangerous opioid fentanyl.
