Hurricanes douse Blazers 2-1 in overtime

KAMLOOPS — Jordy Bellerive scored the overtime winner as the Lethbridge Hurricanes squeezed past the Kamloops Blazers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Collin Shirley scored the games first goal 7:27 into the first period. He took a pass from Rudolfs Balcers and wired a shot past goaltender Stuart Skinner for a 1-0 lead. 

The Blazers had some chances in the period, but they didn’t score. The Hurricanes had some of their own chances, but goaltender Connor Ingram was on his game. Shots were 12-11 for the Blazers. 

The Hurricanes tied the game in the second period. After a failed odd man rush, Brennan Menell set up Giorgio Estephan for a one-timer goal and a 1-1 tie.

The Blazers struggled to generate chances in the third period as they were outshot 9-5 in the period. The penalty kill came up big late in the third period as they killed off a penalty to send the game to overtime. 

The Blazers had their chances to win the game in overtime. They had a couple of odd man rushes, but couldn’t convert. 

The Hurricanes came back on an odd man rush and Jordy Bellerive was there to finish it off to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Blazers. 

Connor Ingram stopped 30 of 32 shots on the night, while Stuart Skinner turned aside 27 of 28 shots. The Blazers were 1-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
