BARRIERE, B.C. — Barriere Mayor Virginia Smith has confirmed the community’s Volunteer Fire Chief Al Kirkwood has resigned amid a police investigation.

“Mr. Kirkwood has resigned as fire chief for the District of Barriere Volunteer Fire Department. We have an interim fire chief by the name of Rob Lennea. Our volunteer fire department is still up and running, and very strong.”

Smith says investigators have not had any contact with District of Barriere employees, though they did seize computers belonging to the district briefly before returning them the same day.
