VANCOUVER — The first in a series of powerful storms is expected to hit the coast late tonight, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of the south coast, warning that communities on Vancouver Island could see up to 200 millimetres of rain, and parts of the mainland could see up to 100 millimetres.

The City of Vancouver has encouraged residents to take measures in preparation for the storms, including cleaning leaves and debris away from sewer drains and catch basins.

The wet, windy weather is expected to last through Sunday.
