MP McLeod questions electoral reform findings

KAMLOOPS — The MP for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo says a random telephone survey conducted last night refutes the recommendations from the riding’s Electoral Reform Committee.

Cathy McLeod says out of 736 randomly-selected people surveyed, nearly 60 per cent of decided voters don’t believe the current ‘first past the post’ system should change.

She adds nearly two-thirds of decided voters favour a referendum on whether the system should change.

Both results contradict those put forward by the local committee.

McLeod says this proves those who decided to join the Electoral Reform Committee already have a vested interest in change.

“I was really trying to get a better reflection of is the general population because for many people, electoral reform is not top of mind, it’s not day-to-day. Certainly reflecting their opinions is very important also,” explained McLeod.

McLeod adds the survey gives her more confidence that she can speak to the wishes of the riding’s population.
