VICTORIA — Matthew Phillips’ goal with 9:40 to play in the third period was the winner, as the Victoria Royals beat the Kamloops Blazers 1-0 on Friday night.

The Blazers had a solid first period, but didn’t score despite outshooting the Royals 10-6 in the period.

The second period saw both teams trade some scoring chances and power play opportunities. Royals goaltender Griffen Outhouse stopped everything he saw, as did Connor Ingram in the Blazers net. These two teams headed into the final period scoreless.

Early in the third period, the Blazers had a 5-on-3 power play but came up empty handed.

Matthew Phillips took a great pass off the boards from Ryan Peckford and snuck in alone for his first goal of the season.

The Blazers had a lot of pressure in the latter half of the third. Matt Revel’s shot hit a stick and went wide. Deven Sideroff had a last minute chance but fired the puck over the net.

Griffen Outhouse had the shutout with 34 saves and Connor Ingram stopped 23 of 24 shots. Both teams were 0-for-6 on the power play.

These two teams go at it again on Saturday night at the Save-on-Foods Centre at 7:05pm.
