KAMLOOPS — Lauren McCurrach is proving you can make a difference at any age.

The 12-year-old Kamloops girl showed up to the Terry Fox Run at Riverside park this morning, Sep 18, with a donation of $8,600.

McCurrach had known she would participate in the run since last December, but it was her father Richard’s cancer diagnosis that motivated her to raise as much money as she could.

McCurrach asked her father for a list of email addresses, made numerous phone calls, and visited people in person in order to collect the donations.

“I just told people about my dad who was diagnosed with cancer in February, and they were just like, ‘OK, I’ll give you $100.’”

Richard McCurrach said his daughter’s fundraising goals were constantly increasing.

“I told her to set her goal high and she set it at $3,500 and surpassed that quickly, changed it to $7,000 and beat that as well,” he said.

Richard McCurrach adds the Terry Fox Foundation has an important role to play in funding cancer research.

“What I have been told by the doctors (is) the speed of research continues to accelerate and it’s foundations like the Terry Fox Foundation that provide the incentive and the ability for people to continue on the research to help beat this disease.”
