KAMLOOPS — Remember Aesop’s fable of the Tortoise and the Hare? What if the race was all tortoises? This weekend, that question will be answered, as the 15th annual Volkswagen Turtle River Race takes place on the South Thompson River.

With only 1950 turtles in each race, the odds of winning a prize are good if you’ve already purchased your ticket. The proceeds of this years race will help fund Western Canada Theatre’s youth programming for the upcoming year. Lori Marchand, Executive Director of WCT says the funds generated by the race play a vital role in allowing Western Canada Theatre to share the magic of live drama with children in the region.

“It’s critical. We’re so lucky in Kamloops to have such a vibrant arts community,” Marchand told CFJC Today. “Western Canada Theatre, of course, has beer a pillar of that for over 40 years, and that’s extraordinary for a community of our size, and it really is because this community is so great at supporting event’s such as the VW Turtle River Race. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
