REVELSTOKE — Highway 1 near Three Valley Gap, west of Revelstoke, will be closed in both directions this coming Tuesday (Sept. 20), to allow for the installation of the first four Remote Avalanche Control systems.
"It is important we get this technology installed before the winter season,"said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. "These new systems will allow operators to fire charges remotely so that avalanche control can be completed at any time, under any weather condition. This will greatly reduce the duration of closures on this stretch of highway."

The new systems (RACS) will allow for avalanche control on a 24-hour basis throughout the winter. Eight separate RACS will be installed at key locations along the south side of Three Valley Lake.

Crews expect to install four systems this fall, with the remainder to be put in next year.
Extended closures will take effect on Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
