B.C. Unemployment rate drops

VANCOUVER  —   Canada added 26,200 jobs in August _ far more than analysts expected _ but the unemployment rate rose to 7.0 per cent.

Economists had estimated the August jobs report from Statistics Canada would show an addition of 15,000 net new jobs for the month and the unemployment rate to hold steady at 6.9 per cent.

The B.C. rate is down a tenth of a point to 5.5 percent, but more interesting is the fact that Alberta’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.4 percent, down two tenths of a point, perhaps an indication that the economy is picking up a bit in that province.
