City of Merritt restricting residents’ water use

MERRITT, B.C. — With drought conditions on the Coldwater River, the City of Merritt has passed a motion that reduces the number of days residents can water their lawns and gardens from three days a week to two.

The expansion of watering restrictions came into effect immediately after council voted in favour of the motion to prohibit watering on Wednesdays and Thursdays until September 30.

Last week, the province encouraged residents to cut back voluntarily on their water use by 30%.

Additional restrictions were deemed necessary since the Coldwater River system has been nearing Level 4, or “extremely dry” drought conditions.
