KAMLOOPS — A charge of aggravated assault has been sworn against a 19 year old man accused of stabbing a Kamloops cab driver early yesterday.

The charge was sworn against Austin Eyres this afternoon.

Kamloops RCMP Corporal Jodi Shelkie says the suspect was arrested thanks to members of the public who saw his photo in local media and then spotted him a short time later.

“We had a few people phone in, who were able to recognize him. They called the RCMP immediately, and from there we were able to locate him,” said Shelkie.

Shelkie adds the motive of the stabbing may have been robbery, but that’s not confirmed.

“We will have to wait to speak further with the victim. He is still in serious condition at the hospital, and we haven’t been able to speak with him yet to find out what the motive was. We are not sure right now if it was robbery.”

Shelkie says Royal Inland Hospital has upgraded the victim’s prognosis, and while his condition is still listed as ‘serious,’ it is no longer considered ‘life-threatening.’
