KAMLOOPS — More than 50,000 Catholics in the Kamloops region have a new bishop.

Father Joseph Phuong Nguyen of Vancouver has been named the successor to retiring Bishop David Monroe.

Nguyen most recently served as the vicar general and moderator for the curia in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, and becomes the sixth bishop of the Kamloops diocese.

The Diocese of Kamloops covers a 120,000 square kilometre region, stretching as far north as Quesnel and as far south as Merritt.
