KAMLOOPS — The results of an RCMP traffic blitz in Kamloops this week show a surprising number of local people still don’t wear seat belts.

Mounties set up on Fortune Drive, Columbia Street, and Seymour Street Tuesday.

Corporal Shelkie says in total, they issued 16 tickets for people failing to wear their safety belts.

“That was surprising to me as well. I looked back at the last couple of blitzes and there weren’t nearly that many. I’m not sure why there was so many on this day,” explained Shelkie, who added, “They’ve been out for a long time now, and it is something that most people normally wear, their seat belt.”

In addition to the seat belt violations, RCMP also found 19 people using electronic devices and nine drivers speeding, including one motorcyclist clocked at 105 kilometres per hour along Seymour Street, where the speed limit is 50.

That person’s bike was impounded for seven days.
