KAMLOOPS —  Kamloops council has given the green light to rezone about 80 acres near Thompson Rivers University to accommodate long term planning for the University.

The TRU master development plan would provide a 20-30 year development projection for the facility.

TRU is hoping to develop its campus similar to other major universities, with housing and commercial components in addition to increased teaching space.

The first phase of the long-term project will likely be a three-building component, which would include close to 200 condos, which would be located behind the law school.

The idea of the plan is to enter intro a Phased Development Agreement with the university to enable the school to develop the lands in a responsible, planned manner, coordinating existing infrastructure in the short term with existing road and service networks, but ensuring that future development takes into account new roads and services to provide a proper development.

To accommodate the idea, council has taken to the first three readings bylaws that creates a Comprehensive Development Zone and rezone several properties from Post Secondary, Public, Agriculture and Parks use to be included in the new proposal.
