KAMLOOPS —  RCMP tracked down several people in the community today – handcuffed them – and threw them in jail, all in support of the United Way Thompson Cariboo, which invests in programs supporting children and youth, families in poverty and building strong communities.

Kamloops RCMP tracked down nearly 40 hardened crooks today, each one arrested and thrown in the slammer, and who knew there were so many delinquents in the city.

It was all part of the 5th annual ‘jail & bail’ fundraising event for United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo. Well known community leaders and Kamloops residents were among the jailbirds outside Hotel 540 facing a variety of charges, and having to dig deep to make bail which was set at $1,000 per person.

“We have so much fun and it gets people out and engaged in a different way to give back and it’s really about our relationship with our donors and the RCMP and those funds, we couldn’t fulfill our obligation and support the non-profits without these dollars,” says Danalee Baker, Executive Director of United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo.

United Way invests in programs supporting children and youth, families in poverty and building strong communities. The organization touches the lives of thousands of people and 52 non-profits in 10 different communities benefit, including the Y Women’s Shelter, where a massive kitchen renovation was made possible. But United Way’s work goes well beyond Kamloops, stretching to agencies all the way up to the Cariboo as well.

“Anything from prevention programs Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs, all the way to Ask Wellness and finding beds for folks on the streets,” says Baker.

For the past 5 years, United Way and the Kamloops RCMP have joined forces for the ‘Jail & Bail’ event, helping to raise more than $300,000

“It’s just a good day and we’re just happy to be a part of it, and raise some money for United Way who do tremendous work in our community,” says Superintendent Brad Mueller of Kamloops RCMP.

Over the course of 5 hours, officers went all over the city to round up the criminals. Even an innocent reporter and her husband couldn’t escape the long arm of the law. CIFM Afternoon Host Jeremy McParland and CFJC News Reporter Tanya Cronin,  got handcuffed and hauled off to the clink.
