Bear garbage by-law begins

KAMLOOPS — A city by-law prohibiting residents from putting their garbage out before 4 a.m. on pick-up days takes effect tomorrow, April 1st.

It’s all part of Kamloops’ bear smart program, trying to keep as many attractants out of sight to discourage bears from entering neighbourhoods. Failure to comply can lead to a $100 fine, or more under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Local conservation officers are working with the City of Kamloops to introduce more secure garbage bins in problem areas.
