KAMLOOPS — Avalanche Canada has issued a Special Public Avalanche Warning, saying several factors are combining to give forecasters concern that this weekend could be ripe for avalanche activity in the Central and Southern Interior.

Forecasting Program Supervisor James Floyer says while the lower elevations have been getting rain and fog in the past couple of weeks, the higher elevations have been getting snow.

“We’ve got quite a lot of storm snow that’s just been building really for the last two weeks or so,” says Floyer. “We’ve got a weak layer that’s buried under a metre of snow, and we’ve seen a number of close calls [and] surprise avalanches on that weak layer. That’s really what’s giving us concern here.”
