Tourism drives uplifting numbers at Kamloops Airport

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Airport is seeing the scale of passenger traffic increases it hasn’t seen since Westjet landed in the city eight years ago.

The airport saw more than 31-thousand travelers pass through last month, a 10 per cent increase over January of 2015.

Manager Fred Legace says tourist traffic is driving the increase.

“Of course, the low Canadian dollar has really had a big effect here,” said Legace. “With really excellent winter conditions for the ski resorts in the area, that’s bringing a lot of people into the airport, and aircraft as well for some of the private people coming in for the resorts up in the North Thompson area.”

Legace notes when you add that factor to more Canadians staying in Canada for travel, that equates to a very good month for air travel.

He adds he’s hoping the trend continues through the rest of the winter.
