KAMLOOPS — A conference beginning tomorrow morning (Feb. 15) at Thompson Rivers University sets out to determine how the 2014 Supreme Court of Canada ruling on aboriginal title and rights should be enacted in the real world.

Determining Access: Theory and Practice in Implementing Indigenous Governance over Lands and Resources is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

Janna Promislow of the TRU Faculty of Law says it’s no longer a question of if First Nations governance should take place, but how.

“On the ground even regardless of the law, there’s a lot of conversation going on between industry, government, and indigenous communities,” says Promislow. “So we want to move the conversation more towards ‘how do we do this,’ and a little away from the ‘why’ and ‘should we’ aspects of the topic.”
