KAMLOOPS —The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack are closer than ever to clinching their first ever Canada West men’s basketball divisional title.
The WolfPack improved to 14-2 with a weekend sweep of the visiting University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. The score on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre on Saturday (Feb 6) was 70-56.

The loss drops the Timberwolves to 3-13 on the campaign.

“We stayed the course throughout the game,” said Clark. “ We probably did more things right than wrong tonight than yesterday. We would do a couple of things right and then make a silly mental error. We need to clean that up. You are usually three possessions away from being a really good team and three possessions away from being a really bad team. It goes back to preparation. That is all we can control is our ability to prepare. If you don’t do that you don’t get your best performance. We have a couple of weeks left to improve upon that.”

“Tonight’s game was similar to Friday’s,” said UNBC bench boss Todd Jordan. “We were down one more guy because of injury. We were playing guys out of position and a lot of young kids. I was proud of the way they came out and battled. We just don’t have the veteran presence out there. It is tough to go with a lot of rookies against a team like TRU and expect to win. I was proud of the guys, the effort and the battle. There were some real positives we can use going forward.”

And those positives were? “Just little performances from the young kids,” said Jordan. “Saje Gosal made his first career start and made some key points. Just an opportunity to get a lot of guys in which is good.”
TRU led throughout 21-18 after the first quarter, 36-26 at the half and 50-37 at three quarter time.

Thompson Rivers was led by ‘TRU Bookstore/McDonalds Leader of the Pack player of the game’ Albert Medrano (3rd year, guard, Los Altos, CA) with 14 points. Volodymyr Iegorov (4th year, forward, Donetsk, Ukraine) added 12 points while Reese Pribilsky (5th year, guard, Victoria, BC) had 11 points.

Josh Wolfram (5th year, forward, Kamloops, BC) contributed 12 rebounds.

UNBC’s main offensive threat was Gosal with 14 points. Rhys Elliot and Vaggelis Loukas both had 12 points
.
The WolfPack will head to Fraser Valley next week (Feb 12-13) knowing they need one victory to clinch their first Explorer Division title. UNBC entertains Mount Royal.

TRU will close out their Canada West regular season at home on Feb 19-20 when they entertain the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat. Tip off on the 19th will be 8 pm on the Warner Rentals Court.
