KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops woman is pedaling to divert food waste from landfills.

The B.C. Lottery Corporation is trying to pioneer commercial composting in Kamloops.

After conducting a waste audit it was determined more than 60% of the waste collected at BCLC was food.

Marcia Dick of Waste Naught B.C. is the only vendor that offers organics collection in Kamloops.

She comes to BCLC twice a week and collects the food placed in these bins.

Dick says, “it’s really important if the business wants to take on any recycling program that they have recycling bins and compost bins right next to the garbage can.”

Once collected, Dick places the blue bins of organics on her trailer and hauls them using her bicycle.

Then she pedals to community gardens like this one at riverside park where she places the waste in composters.

In just over four months since Marcia and BCLC entered their partnership, she has collected over one tonne of waste which is being diverted from the landfill.
