BAMFIELD, B.C. — A west coast Vancouver Island First Nation is taking preliminary steps toward creating a tourist centre around the isolate community of Bamfield, almost 200 kilometres northwest of Victoria.

The Huu-ay-aht First Nation has purchased 11 properties near Bamfield, including a 16-hectare air strip, gas station, lodge and marina, and residential lots.

Rance Island, one of the small islands in Bamfield Inlet, has cultural significance to the First Nation and is also included in the deal.

No price for the purchase has been released.
