TRU Faculty to take job action

KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University’s faculty association says its members will launch job action Thursday, January 13.

But President Tom Friedman says that job action won’t be a full scale strike, and will not affect classes or students.

Friedman says details of the action will be released Thursday morning, but it will be “internal” in nature.

“I can characterize it as a kind of wake up call to senior administration at the university,” said Friedman. “We have been in bargaining for eleven months. We have had a lot of problems on this campus dealing with grievances… Really a failure to meet and to work in a consultative way.”

Mediation sessions with mediator Mark Brown are scheduled to begin Friday morning and last through the weekend.

TRUFA has pledged not to hold job action while mediation is ongoing.

But Friedman adds the mediator may cancel the sessions if he feels the sides are too far apart.

The university has posted its characterizations of the two bargaining positions on its website, though Friedman says some of those characterizations are inaccurate.
