Drivers asked to slow down in snow following accidents

KAMLOOPS — Following a white Christmas in Kamloops, Mother Nature continues to blanket the city with snow. Residents awoke to another layer of the white stuff, and should expect more overnight, making for some slick conditions.

It led to a few accidents on Tuesday morning, including a single-vehicle incident on Columbia Street, where a Honda lost control coming down the hill and wound up on a snow bank near the sidewalk. There was another along Westsyde road early tuesday morning.

It’s what can happen when the city receives 10 centimeters of snow over a 24-hour period, on top of what fell during the holidays. This is nowhere near the dump Kamloops got a year ago, but enough to create slippery roads.

“We need drivers to reduce their speeds, because the posted speed limits are for ideal conditions, which is not what we have out there right now,” says Cpl. Cheryl Bush of the Kamloops RCMP. “And leave greater space between the vehicles around you, particularly as you’re approaching intersections and preparing to stop.”

The white stuff has kept snow plows on city streets, as they try to keep up with the seemingly continuous snowfall.

“With the amount of snow that’s been accumulating, we are seeing a lot of snow pile up on the edge of roads,” says Streets and Environmental Manager Glen Farrow. “The windrow we’re creating with the volumes of snow on edge of roads is large, and with that we’re encouraging people to slow down.”

He adds that “some of the large volumes of snow on edge of roads will be removed, time-permitting, on arterial roads.”

The city says it has plows on the road 24 hours a day during these events, keeping the main roads as clear as possible, and while side streets are less of a priority, plows made progress in spots on Monday night.

“We were able to get into a lot of side streets through [Monday] evening, so we’re in a pretty good position with the side roads. Not too much has accumulated,” says Farrow. “Depending on what the weather looks like over the next couple days, we intend to move into removing more snow for bus stops along our major arterial roads.”

It’s been tough to keep up for anyone trying to clear the snow from driveways and sidewalks. Kamloops is expected to get more light snow overnight into Wednesday.
