Y Womens Shelter collecting gifts

KAMLOOPS — Crises know no boundaries when it comes to time, and for women and children living in the Y Women’s Shelter, Christmas can add extra financial burdens – especially during already tough times.

Women and children at the shelter are often fleeing violence with just the clothes on their back. That’s why staff are collecting monetary donations and gift items to make Christmas a less stressful time.

“There’s so many women who, when they’re leaving a relationship or struggling with anything, Christmas is an added level of stress,” said Jessanne Stanko, a family support worker. Stanko added, “Anyone who has children, when you’re leaving those situations, there’s a sense of loss already. I think during holidays and Christmas especially that loss of family is really felt.”
