Police have released more information about the arrest of a suspected parking meter bandit.

34 year old Michael Szekely was arrested Friday while allegedly breaking into a meter on Centennial Drive.

Cst Jocelyn Noseworthy says with 113 meters damaged over the last week, they are investigating other possible suspects.

“We obviously can’t definitively tie him to all these damaged and stolen meters, so it’s quite possible there’s more than him doing this.”

Noseworthy says the motive was to steal coins from the meters.

“We did find some coins on him. The bylaws officers tell us, on average, those parking meters usually have between $5 and $10 in coins in them.”

The suspect — who was known to police — is charged with theft, mischief under $5,000, and possessing a coin-operated device.

“Our volunteers were doing patrols keeping an eye on things, and we had a police officer in an unmarked vehicle, so all of that combined, they did managed to see him in the act of breaking into one of the parking meters,” says Noseworthy.
