BRITISH COLUMBIA – Premier David Eby and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy George Heyman have issued a statement on Earth Day 2023, expressing their commitment to protect the planet and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in British Columbia. Premier Eby emphasized the need for immediate and lasting actions to combat climate change and its effects on the province.

“Our government continues to prioritize investing in climate action, making it more affordable for people to switch to electric vehicles and cleaner ways to heat and cool their homes,” said Premier Eby.

“We are committed to greater electrification and continuing the transition to other renewable energy sources.” Eby continued

The premier claimed that the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 was one of the most progressive climate action plans in North America, and is leading the province toward a future where new buildings and vehicles produce zero emissions, communities are ready for a changing climate, and industries are the cleanest in the world.

The premier also stressed the importance of conserving and caring for the environment to secure a future for the biodiversity of the province. The government is working with Indigenous Peoples and other partners to protect 30% of the land by 2030 and restore watersheds to safeguard fish and wildlife habitat.

To prevent waste, Premier Eby said the government has invested in composting facilities and organics collection programs and expanded recycling programs. Additionally, nearly 4,000 kilometers of British Columbia’s shoreline has had debris removed to support environmental sustainability.

“Climate change and biodiversity loss affect us all,” said Premier Eby. “Earth Day is an opportunity for each of us to dedicate our time and energy to making B.C., and the planet we call home, a cleaner, more sustainable place where future generations can thrive.”
